Homeless Series

This was the first Christmas I wasn't able to spend in Atlanta with the family. Instead, I was in Seattle and decided to shoot a few portraits for the homeless project I have been working on for the past year. What started out as a commissioned assignment has slowly grown into an ongoing project without an end in the near future. I met a few nice people on Friday that invited me back this week. I found a gathering of people in a park near Pike Place while a family handed out food and hot beverages. The following portraits were shot on Christmas morning around Seattle. My first significant and consistent assignments came from Lowe's Creative Ideas, a home improvement magazine out of Birmingham, AL, many years ago. I have since departed somewhat from interiors and home assignments but did have one in Seattle recently. Always enjoy seeing people's homes. It is a nice glimpse into their lives.

The seafood festival kicked off yesterday with the Blessing of the Fleet. Isabel Pateritsas, Miss Florida Seafood, waved to the crowd from the bow of Buddy Ward's shrimpin' boat. The sun eased down over the marsh, but the blues lingered late. Mary brought the house down, or rather to their dancin' feet, on multiple occasions.

Vancouver

I spent last week in Vancouver for a few editorial publications. Weather was nice for 2 days but the typical overcast, drizzly rain moved in and slowed me down. Its hard to squeeze a four day shoot into 1.5 days of nice weather, but was nice hanging out with some friends (thanks to Richard and Nicole for the hospitality). Tomorrow I take off for Atlanta and 2 weeks in the South. I'll be at the Seafood Festival in Apalachicola Bay, FL on Nov 6th and 7th, shucking, eating and shooting oysters. Then I am ditching the car and paddling with David as he enters the Apalachicola watershed (Hooch). Fired up about the float over the slow moving black water. We'll see some gators and meet some interesting folks I am sure.

Bemis Art Exposition

This past weekend I had pieces from my Portraits of Ethiopia series up in the Bemis Building downtown. I shot this series while doing a documentary on coffee in Ethiopia earlier this year. There is certain vibe in those historic, creative buildings downtown, and it was nice to be surrounded by creative people. Belize Tear

I was fortunate enough to travel to Belize with Candace Schlosser and her husband, Al, for Coastal Living magazine early this year. Candace is the managing editor at the magazine and the writer for this story. Al is a triathlete who had just completed a competition and was ready to enjoy a beach adventure with some relaxing mixed in. I was just tagging along shooting everything. It was a fun trip to say the least.

I have been traveling a bunch the last 3 weeks. Drove from Seattle to Cincinnati via Glacier NP and Badlands NP. Then it was off to Hawaii for a shoot. Here are some of the images. Tomorrow off to Maine.

Soggy Sea Kayaking

I traveled up to Vancouver Island for a sea kayaking trip this past week with David and Stacy. We left Tofino on a cloudy day and paddled a few hours to Whitesand Cove. That afternoon ran began to fall and rarely stopped for 3 days. Luckily, we found a few walled tents nearby that acted as a base for what we figured was Sleep Camp. We ate, played scrabble and slept for most of the next day. A small town, part of Ahousaht First Nation, lies on the east side of Flores Island, a short paddle from our campsite.

Two of my closest friends were married this weekend in Seattle. I was mainly a guest, but couldn't resist a few moments, like when the party spilled into the streets of Capital Hill or when the tandom bicycle made its way to the reception or the 2am diving board meeting at Green Lake.

I was also shooting a story for Sunset magazine in Edmonds, WA for their Northwest Day Trip and came across a memorial service at Brackett's Landing.

Last month I went to the Sacred Valley in Peru for a 3 week student photography course through National Geographic Student Expeditions. Aside from the logistical headaches, teaching photography to 10 students with the Andes as our backdrop was a unbelievable experience. Luckily, I was able to shoot a little on my own.

Throughout many areas of Latin America, 'chicha', a fermented corn drink, is the most popular beverage. There are a variety of types, some made by chewing the corn and spitting into a vat. In Peru, chicha has been around since the Inca times or before. Little red garbage bags sit on the ends of poles over doors indicating fresh chicha for sale. I followed those red flags.

In many instances, photographers shouldn't write. There are exceptions to this statement, though I am not sure I am one. I've thought about a blog for a long time but never thought I could consistently post. I realized I have many images that fall between my stock agency and my website only to fill up hard drive space. Maybe this will be their home.
